CSM BA Show

Gracie Wales-Bonner was last night named the winner of the L'Oréal Professionel Talent Award at Central Saint Martins´ BA show. Following the death of the renowned MA professor Louise Wilson just over a week ago, the proceedings had a more poignant mood about them, simultaneously more celebratory yet respectful in tone than usual.

Former BA and MA student Matthew Harding of fashion label Palmer / Harding dedicated the show to Wilson, while Master of Ceremony Jeremy Till paid his tribute to the fashion tutor. "The loss has hit us incredibly hard and we thank the industry for all of its support," he said after 40 students had shown their collections and before the prize-giving took place.

Joining Fashion Design and Marketing student Wales-Bonner in the end-of-year celebrations were womenswear students Fiona O'Neill and Asai Ta. O'Neill scooped third prize for her painted dress pieces, like stiff walking works of art, while Ta won second prize for his angst-ridden power rags, torn and tangled jeans, T-shirts, jackets and contemporary wear striding down the pseudo car park space to girl gang effect. It was Wales-Bonner's cool Seventies sparkle, however, that saw her take home the biggest accolade of the evening - her bouclé jackets and natty flares, jewel-encrusted pockets and overall dainty womenswear aesthetic, worn by men, made for a cool and fresh offering.

But the evening didn't come without its trends: seen in more than one or two moments of Meadham Kirchhoff drama and irreverence for hyper folkloric nods; a sense of boy-girl ambiguity for menswear and womenswear worn vice versa; and a good dose of dishevelled chic for torn, trailing creations with raggedy enraged attitude.

Overall, it was a diverse and strong year with clothes that could actually be worn at the core of many a collection - click back later for all the show photos.

The graduate collections continue this week with those from the Royal College of Art tomorrow while Graduate Fashion Week gets underway this weekend.
