Paloma Faith's "Only Love Can Hurt Like This" - Single Review

She may not be a huge star stateside, but people need to take notice of Paloma Faith and her breathtaking voice. The UK darling released her third full length effort, A Perfect Contradiction, in March and already three singles have been commissioned, although none have made an impact on the U.S. charts.

The Pharrell-produced "Can't Rely On You" was an expected misstep, however, flawless second single "Only Love Can Hurt Like This", written by Cher collaborator Diane Warren, is where the magic truly lies. Officially released back in May, the 60s-inspired, jazz-like ballad plays it smart by focusing all attention on Faith's beautiful, delicate, show-stopping vocal performance as she sings of the complicated nature of love and relationships. It seems she desperately wants to leave her lover, but just can't bring herself to do so.

"And every time, every time you go, it's like a knife that cuts right through my soul," the artist belts before she hits certain notes on the chorus that will make any listener literally shiver. It is the main portion of the song that truly make the effort a contender for major awards later in the season. Her voice is strong, powerful and convincing as she gives us a look into her personal love life.

Faith's latest album may have been criticized for a lack of originality and for being somewhat "generic", but most can probably agree "Only Love Can Hurt Like This" was the standout hit. With drums and violins assisting heartfelt lyrics and a heavenly performance, the album's second single should have no problem catching on... even if it is two months down the road already.
