Wow, the Independent outdid themselves with the first harsh words on the Isabel Marant for H&M collection entitled, 'Isabel Marant for H&M: collection designer is no Karl Lagerfeld.'
Normally we have a whole load of lovely, glowing reviews about this with the only real critical feedback concerning the H&M website. No one has really ever slammed the collection. In fact, most H&M collabs have the same reaction for reviewers. I mean how anyone wrote with a straight face that the Versace second round gear was great, I don't know. So yeah back to the Independent.
Alexander Fury wrote some seriously scathing article on Wednesday, which included this :
'Isabel Marant makes jeans, embroidered jackets and fringed suede booties. Her most noteworthy contribution to the state of modern dress is that hybrid of training-shoe and trotter, the "wedge sneaker". It's an unholy coupling, but for the past few years it has proved ubiquitous, a fashion verruca we're not yet shut of.'
I love my sneaker wedges. They are the only way I can do heels now and are a god send on a night out.
Oh and not to mention this snippet :
'Marant's success is also due, in no small part, to Emmanuelle Alt, Paris Vogue's editor in chief and for many years the stylist for Marant's label. Hence the fact that Isabel Marant became the "uniform" of the Paris Vogue set: impossibly skinny jeans, oversized jackets, unwashed hair, spindly heels.'
Do I sense a bit of a bite about the Paris Vogue set? I think I do.... He does however praise the former H&M collabs of Maison Martin Margiela. A collection which was, in fashion sense, brilliant but in a consumer sense, baffling to most people. I think its a clever move on the behalf of H&M. They reach out to designers for different women. A Versace woman is not a Isabel Marant woman. It's a constant attempt to reach new people and make them clients. I think its clever business. There is no money in constantly presenting the more outrageous collections - as a high street company. So I think there is a good sense of back the fuck off needed here.....and lay off my sneaker heels please!
