We know the speed of WiFi that is approximately 150 Mbps to 200 Mbps that is considered a good Internet speed. But do you know what the speed of LiFi is?

What is LiFi (Light Fidelity) Technology?

LiFi is a technology for wireless communications between devices using light to transmit data. LiFi is a full form of Light fidelity

The term LiFi was first introduced by Prof. Harald Haas (Germany) founder of LiFi during a 2011 TEDGlobal talk in Edinburgh. It is a very interesting concept.
LiFi is a wireless technology used for wireless devices. Globally all internet networks connected through Fiber Optic Cable lies from the Sea.

WiFi uses Radio waves for data transmission whereas LiFi uses Light beam that is called LiFi Visible Light communication for data transmission. 

This is an optical communication technology based on visible light rays. The frequency of these light rays is near about 400 to 800 Thz. 

Because this technology uses light rays, the speed of data transfer is very high, which is approximately 224 Gbps. by this speed you can easily download large size files of videos, and can browse without disturbance.
Since this technology utilizes Light, you will need to keep the light in your room constantly. so that there is constant light in your room.


History of LiFi

LiFi technology was invented by Prof. Harald Haas In 2011. Harald Haas first introduced his invention of LiFi technology in TEDGlobal talk in Edinburgh.
According to him, if the information transmitted by a Visible Light Portion (VLP) then that technology is called Visible Light Communication. 

He worked on the LiFi project since 2010 and after announcing the LiFi concept in TEDGlobal talk immediately he started a company named PureLiFi.

In October 2011, the company founded the LiFi Consortium, bringing together groups of industries. Both had the same goal of developing a high-speed wireless network. To remove the drawbacks of the Radio Waves. 

There were a number of companies that began to produce the Unidirectional Visible Light Communication Technology, but it was very different from LiFi. Visible Light Communication Technology was screened with LiFi in 2012. 

This was approved for results in August 2013. It has a single color LED. Data Transmission took place at a speed of 6 Gbit / sec.

In the September 2013 press, it was said that there is no need for Line of Sight in LiFi. The October 2013 report states that Chinese manufacturers are engaged in the development of the LiFi kit. 

In April 2014, Stins Coman, a Russian corporation, built a wireless network called Beamcaster. The data speed is around 1.25 gigabytes a second. The speed of LiFi will be 5GB / sec in the future.

How LiFi Works?

this technology also works like other internet devices. this technology uses the following components.

  • Lamp Driver: all the data from the internet is streambed in Lamp Driver.
  • LED Lamp: data from the internet is used to modulate the intensity of the LED light sources.
  • Photo Detector: the photodetector picks up the signal.

workflow of LiFi:

  • In this technology, the data is fed into the LED light bulb (with signal processing technology) and then sends data (embedded in its beam) at high speeds to the photodetector (photodiode).
  • The slight changes in the accelerated dimming of the LED bulbs are then translated into an electrical signal by the receiver.
  • The signal is then transformed back to a binary data stream that the user can know as a site, video and audio application that allows devices to operate on the internet.

ADVANTAGES of LiFi:

  • LI-Fi will also have a major effect on the internet of things, with data being transmitted at even higher speeds and many more devices being able to communicate with each other.
  • Li-Fi is safer than Wi-Fi, due to its shorter range.
  • Since it does not pollute, it can be termed a green device-to-device communication technology on the Internet of Things (loT).
  • Li-Fi systems consume less electricity.


LIMITATIONS OF Li-Fi 

  • Because visible light can not pass through opaque objects and the contact requires a line of sight, its range will remain very limited, to begin with. 
  • More efficient LED bulbs would need to be positioned at different locations to enjoy maximum connectivity. 
  • Li-Fi is likely to experience interference from external light sources, such as sunlight and lamps, and obstructions in the transmission path, and can thus cause communication interruptions.
  • Li-Fi allows the lightbulb to be on at all times to provide access, which means the lights need to be on during the daytime.

what is the difference between WiFi and LiFi

WiFi and LiFi are wireless technologies and both are used for the internet but these are different from each other.

  • in LiFi data transmitted via Light and in WiFi data transmitted via Radio Waves.
  •  LiFi is based on Visible light whereas Wifi is based on Radio waves for transmission of data.
  • in LiFi the field of light is limited that is why this connection is secure but in WiFi, the network connection is open and maybe hacked that is why this connection is not more secure comparing to LiFi.
  • for data transmission, in LiFi has a LED bulb whereas in WiFi has a Wireless Router.
  • the speed of the internet in LiFi is approximately 1Gbps whereas the speed of the internet in WiFi is near about 150Mbps.
  • LiFi network can cover 10-meter distance coverage whereas WiFi can cover 32-meter distance coverage.
